The compact sedan segment is brimming with competitors that boast their efficiency, agility, and practicality. Among the most prominent contenders are the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta and 2026 Toyota Corolla. Here at Pohanka Volkswagen of Salisbury, we believe the Jetta comes out ahead and put together this detailed comparison to explain why.
Performance
When it comes to providing a fun and athletic driving experience around Berlin, the Jetta takes charge thanks to its standard 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It outputs up to 158 horsepower and shines with 184 lb.-ft. of torque, which means responsive, peppy acceleration when you press the gas pedal. The Corolla, on the other hand, offers a standard 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. Though this powertrain sports a higher total of 169 horsepower, its lack of a turbocharger means it falls behind with 151 lb.-ft. of torque. Volkswagen also equipped its model with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, which provides a more engaging feel as it works its way up to speed compared to the Corolla’s standard Continuously Variable Transmission. Even with its enhanced sportiness, the Jetta closely matches the Corolla in efficiency, achieving a 29/40 MPG city/hwy1 EPA-estimated fuel rating — just a touch behind the Toyota’s 32/41 MPG city/hwy2 estimate.
Interior
Both these vehicles offer the amenities to serve as a comfortable daily driver, but the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta leads thanks to a variety of standard and available advantages. This is immediately apparent when comparing their steering wheels, where the Jetta’s is leather-wrapped as standard but only available at a higher trim level in the Corolla. The Volkswagen model also offers available leather upholstery, a sophisticated option that the Corolla does not provide. Technology
